The 1988/89 season captures Paolo Maldini at the beginning of what would become one of football’s defining careers. Still only 20, Maldini was already an established member of Arrigo Sacchi’s Milan side, playing alongside Franco Baresi in a defence that would become synonymous with one of the club’s greatest eras.
That season Milan returned to the summit of European football. Their European Cup campaign included the famous 5–0 semi-final victory over Real Madrid at San Siro, before a commanding 4–0 win over Steaua București in the final in Barcelona. Maldini started the final wearing number 3, helping Milan secure their first European Cup in twenty years.
It was the beginning of a remarkable relationship between Maldini and the competition. He would go on to spend his entire senior career with Milan, inherit the captaincy from Baresi and become one of the most decorated and recognisable players in the club’s history. The number 3 would ultimately become so closely associated with Maldini that Milan retired it following his final season.
